Being a successful online student

Your success as an online student can be attributed to a combination of interrelated factors—habits such as time management, self-direction, and motivation play a big part, as do behaviors such as checking UB email regularly, completing the online orientation, and accessing the class the first day and at least 3 times a week. Whether you’re pursuing UB’s online programs for professional or personal reasons, there are several habits to hone that will help you be successful in your studies.

Time management

Use your time management skills to manage deadlines, readings, projects, and other assignments. The online format allows you to balance your studies with your busy lifestyle. You take the courses asynchronously, so there is no set time each day you need to login, but there are deadlines that you’ll need to meet each week.

Assess your learning style and consider what will help you get the most of your online studies. Self-directed learning allows you to take initiative in your own learning journey.

Consider what is motivating you to participate in online studies. This is the goal you are striving toward. Setting your goals and maintaining your motivation will keep you on course for success.

Check your UB email regularly

After you register for courses, you should check your UB email regularly for course instructions and important messages.

Access your courses the day classes begin

You will receive access to your online courses the first day of class. Log in to review your syllabus and begin your first assignments.

Participate in online orientation

Even before your first class, you’ll have the opportunity to use and explore Canvas, our learning management system. The online orientation begins about one week before your first online course and remains available to you for the rest of your academic career at the University. The orientation only takes a few hours to complete, but gives you the tools you need to be successful in your course. Topics covered include how to:

  • Navigate courses in Canvas
  • Submit an assignment and take a quiz
  • Manage your course including deadlines and grades
  • Use the technology in the course including video and audio recording tools
  • Get technical help if you need it

You’ll also learn about important university resources including the library and eTutoring. You will be automatically enrolled in the free course and will receive an email to your UB email account when it begins.

Prepare and participate regularly

  • Each class has a start and; end date, with weekly assignments and requires regular participation
  • Login to your online class 3-5 times per week to read your course material, get your assignments and interact with other students
  • Plan several hours each week into your schedule to complete your coursework
  • Stay in contact with your instructor if you have any questions or need clarification on course requirements
