Continuing Education Requirements (CEUs)
What are nursing continuing education requirements?
Nursing continuing education requirements, often referred to as continuing education units (CEUs) or contact hours, are learning activities that licensed nurses must complete to maintain or renew their professional nursing license. These requirements ensure that nurses stay current with evolving medical knowledge, technologies, ethical standards, and best practices in patient care.
General requirements
While continuing education requirements differ by state, common expectations include the following:
- CEUs are usually required every one to three years, depending on the license renewal cycle
- Courses must be completed through approved or accredited providers
- Most states specify a minimum number of contact hours (often between 10 and 30 hours)
- Some states require CEUs in specific topic areas, such as ethics, patient safety, or infection control
Continuing education requirements may also differ based on whether a nurse is a licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), or an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN).
Examples of state requirements
RN and LPN requirements
Connecticut requires RNs and LPNs renewing their license after January 1, 2022 to complete two contact hours of continuing education once every six years. These contact hours must include training on:
- Screening for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), risk of suicide, depression, and grief
- Suicide prevention
One contact hour is defined as at least 50 minutes of instruction. Qualifying courses can be offered in-person or online by approved providers such as professional nursing associations, hospitals, academic institutions, or state health departments.
APRN requirements
APRNs in Connecticut must complete a minimum of 50 contact hours of continuing education every two years. These hours must be directly related to their area of practice and include mandatory topics such as:
- Cultural competency
- Diseases (e.g., HIV/AIDS)
- Pharmacotherapeutics (at least 5 contact hours)
- Risk management
- Sexual assault and domestic violence
- Substance abuse, including safe prescribing practices
Additionally, at least two hours of training on mental health conditions common to veterans and their families (including PTSD and suicide prevention) must be completed every six years.
What counts — and what does not?
Not all professional activities count toward nursing continuing education.
What typically counts:
- Academic coursework related to nursing or healthcare
- Accredited online or in-person nursing courses
- Employer-provided education that meets accreditation standards
- Workshops, seminars, and conferences approved by a state board or nursing organization
What typically does not count:
- Basic life support (BLS) or CPR courses, unless explicitly approved
- Non-clinical courses unrelated to nursing practice
- On-the-job training without CEU approval
- Orientation sessions or staff meetings
Always confirm whether an activity qualifies before assuming it will meet CEU requirements.
How to find your specific state requirements
To determine your exact nursing continuing education requirements:
- Visit your state board of nursing website
- Look up requirements based on your license type (LPN, RN, APRN)
- Check renewal timelines and required contact hours
- Confirm which providers and course topics are approved
Many state boards also offer online license portals where nurses can track renewal dates and CEU compliance. Keeping personal records of completed CEUs is strongly recommended in case of audits.
