Positive COVID-19 case on campus

Dear UB Students:

I wanted to inform you that one of your fellow students tested positive for COVID-19 last week. The student is now in isolation in accordance with UB’s COVID-19 guidelines and all of those who came in close contact with this student have been notified and are in quarantine.

While this news may not be surprising, we understand that it may be unsettling. We have done extensive planning to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and, with your help, have been largely successful to date. Our priority remains safety and well-being of the entire UB community.

The fact that we have been on campus for the better part of a month and have only had one positive case is a sign that our efforts have been largely effective. It is also reminder of how important it is that every member of the community complies with UB’s COVID-19 rules and regulations.

To protect everyone’s privacy, we are unable to share additional details about impacted individuals. However, we can assure you that if the University did not communicate with you directly, then you were not in contact with these individuals in quarantine and no action is required at this time.

I will continue to update you throughout the semester and, as we have done since early September, we will update UB’s COVID tracker on www.bridgeport.edu/covid-19.

I encourage you to continue your vigilance and adherence to the COVID-19 regulations to help protect yourself and every member of the UB community:

  • Wear a cloth face cover in public settings.
  • Keep 6 feet of distance between you and people who do not live in your household.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick in your home.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces daily.

It is also important that you monitor your health daily. Watch for common COVID-19 symptoms like fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

If you develop COVID-19 symptoms or come in close contact with someone with COVID-19, we ask that you self-quarantine and call UB Student Health Services at (203) 576-4712 to schedule a test. If Health Services is closed, you may contact AMR through Campus Security at 203-576-4913.

Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do to protect yourself and the entire UB community. Your continued observance of these rules is paramount to preventing and containing outbreaks on our campus.
