Computer Applications and Information Systems (B.S.)

Computer Applications and Information Systems (B.S.)

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Applications and Information Systems focuses on the application of computer hardware, operating systems, databases, and networks as tools for generation of information in support of business decision making. The objective of this degree is to prepare graduates for direct entry into computer applications and information systems positions in industry.

The Computer Applications and Information Systems (CAIS) major prepares students for challenging new opportunities made available by the information-driven business world in the coming age of information super-highways. The integration of information processing, telecommunication technologies and the networking of computer systems will continue to broaden the applications of computer information systems in many areas of the decision-making process.

Courses are offered in logical sequences that lead to technical mastery of at least one major segment of this degree field. Opportunity is offered to pursue special topics of student interest, develop a Senior Project or undertake a Practicum (internship) at a local area company as appropriate to the individual student’s interests.

While the emphasis is on the management of integrated and networked business systems, a solid base of programming, database, and systems design skills are provided. The student practices the use of at least one of several major programming application languages, Visual Basic, JAVA, or C , as information systems applications tools. Systems analysis is approached as a method through which to evaluate hardware and software needs, suitability of operating systems, and appropriateness of wide area or local networks.

The successful CAIS students will be capable of attending to details without losing sight of the large aim of achieving corporate goals. The skills acquired in this program include specification, evaluation, and integration of networkable software and the management and upgrading of existing systems.
