University of Bridgeport Welcomes Dr. Scott Fellows as Director of Teacher Leadership (M.Ed.)

University of Bridgeport is pleased to welcome Dr. Scott Fellows, M.S., Ed.D., as the new director of the Teacher Leadership (M.Ed.) program, a joint graduate offering with Goodwin University designed to prepare educators for leadership roles in today’s evolving schools.

With more than 35 years of experience spanning K–12 and higher education, Dr. Fellows brings a wealth of practical insight, academic expertise, and a deeply student-centered perspective to the program. His career reflects a sustained commitment to strengthening teaching and learning — not only within individual classrooms, but across entire school systems.

Teaching with purpose — leading with perspective

Dr. Fellows has spent the majority of his career so far serving students across six towns in Connecticut’s Regional School District 1, the state’s first regional district. As an experienced mathematics educator, he taught middle and high school math and served as department chair, helping guide curriculum development and instructional practices across grade levels.

While mathematics was his academic foundation, Dr. Fellows’s dedication to education extends well beyond any single discipline. He was drawn to teaching by a desire to support students’ academic growth while also nurturing their emotional and personal development. Central to his philosophy is the belief that educators must meet students where they are in order to help them reach their full potential.

This approach informed his commitment to creating inclusive, supportive learning environments that offer every student the opportunity to succeed regardless of their starting point. He is also deeply invested in holistic approaches to teaching and assessment that recognize the whole learner, rather than focusing solely on grades or test results.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Fellows has held multiple district-level leadership roles, including assistant superintendent, interim principal, and interim superintendent, gaining a robust understanding of how school systems operate at every level. He has also contributed to higher education by teaching graduate-level courses at the University of Hartford and serving on the advisory committee for the Teacher Leadership (M.Ed.) program since its inception.

That long-standing involvement provides Dr. Fellows with a unique perspective on the program’s development — and its role in preparing educators to step into meaningful leadership positions.

Preparing teachers for tomorrow

For Dr. Fellows, teacher leadership is about more than instructional excellence; it’s about shaping the broader future of education. He believes that earning an M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership equips educators with the skills to guide students, collaborate with colleagues, and strengthen school communities through thoughtful, informed leadership.

The joint University of Bridgeport and Goodwin University Teacher Leadership (M.Ed.) program reflects this vision by bringing together educators from diverse districts and professional backgrounds. The program emphasizes collaboration, interdisciplinary learning, and real-world application, ensuring that coursework is grounded in the realities of today’s classrooms.

As program director, Dr. Fellows is focused on helping educators gain practical strategies for addressing classroom challenges, avoiding common obstacles faced by early-career teachers, and building the confidence and leadership capacity needed for long-term success — ultimately supporting stronger teacher retention and more resilient school systems.

“Always put kids first”

In a rapidly changing educational landscape, Dr. Fellows emphasizes the importance of staying grounded in what matters most: students. “If you always put kids first,” he says, “everything else becomes secondary.”

He also highlights the growing importance of social and emotional learning, self-awareness as both a learner and leader, and a willingness to try new approaches. By encouraging educators to step outside their comfort zones, Dr. Fellows believes teachers can foster the same curiosity, resilience, and creativity in their students.

University of Bridgeport welcomes Dr. Fellows to his new role and looks forward to the impact his leadership will have on the Teacher Leadership (M.Ed.) program. With his depth of experience, thoughtful approach, and unwavering commitment to student success, Dr. Fellows is well positioned to help prepare the next generation of teacher leaders in Connecticut and beyond.
