Fostering a Safe, Secure Learning Environment
Our campus has won awards for outstanding safety, and maintaining a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff is our top priority.
At the University of Bridgeport, we take the safety of our students very seriously. In fact, the University has received the prestigious Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Award.
PAL Program
UB has also been recognized for its Personal Alarm Locator (PAL), which, when activated, pinpoints a student’s location on campus and has campus security on site in less than two minutes. The PAL also provides critical health information about our students, in the event of a medical emergency. There are security officers available to our students,
faculty and staff twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
How Does Campus Security Ensure Safety?
We Maintain Adequate Security Staffing
Security services on the campus of the University of Bridgeport are supplied under contract by Securitas Security Services Inc. USA. The Campus Security Department is staffed by 40 personnel and provides security services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Security reports to the Vice President of Administration and Finance.
A uniformed dispatcher staffs the campus security office. The dispatcher takes complaints and requests for service from the community, dispatches personnel to handle them and records the information for such request. In addition, they monitor intrusion; fire and boiler alarms for campus property and the campus secure system computers.
Regular Patrols and High Visibility
The patrol unit of the campus security department consists of a uniformed, armed supervisor on patrol in a high visibility vehicle 24 hours a day, along with varying numbers of uniformed patrol officers on foot and bicycle patrol. They maintain a high visibility security presence on campus; respond to requests for service and reports of suspicious or criminal activity. In addition, they conduct building safety inspections on a regular basis and conduct investigations. The shift supervisors are trained in first aid, CPR and AED and serve as the designated first responders for the campus.
In addition, we maintain access control and security presence during the weekends in the Student Center, when many social events are held. Our department supplies security on a demand basis, for numerous special events such as dances, athletics, visiting dignitaries etc. and assist other campus departments as needed.
Ongoing Incident Reporting
A report system is maintained and statistics on crime are compiled and disseminated by the department. Our department also acts as a clearinghouse for informational crime in the neighborhood supplied by the local police.
Additional Services
The Campus Security Department is also responsible for providing the following support services:
- Issuing ID access cards to students. Also, providing faculty and staff with ID cards. This is done from Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If a person cannot make it during this time, they can schedule another time by placing a call to Campus Security.
- Issuing PAL’s (Personal Alarm Locators) to all students, faculty and staff.
- Providing personal safety (walking) escorts on campus.
