Introducing UB’s New MPH Degree Program

In recent weeks, we have all experienced the magnitude of devastation and loss caused by a pandemic. From epic health crises such as coronavirus to lifestyle and health behavior change, learn how to make an impact on the health, safety, and well-being of humankind through University of Bridgeport’s (UB) newly launched Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program.

The University’s 100% online MPH program is one of the fastest growing and most relevant fields of study globally. Individuals interested in playing a pivotal role in today’s public health arena can enroll in the first of two UB summer sessions that begins on May 11. The program offers six start dates throughout the year.

The MPH program is designed for individuals interested in either advancing their public health career or becoming profession ready with marketable skills.

Carefully crafted to prepare students to be public health practitioners and to help solve complex local, national, and global issues in contemporary public health, the innovative MPH program, taught by skilled practitioners, offers a competency-based curriculum with global health, community health, and health policy and management concentrations.

UB’s MPH program places a strong emphasis on research, evidenced-based practice, and science. According to Dr. Chris Cassirer, ScD, MPH, director of the MPH program and vice provost for online learning, digital services, and strategic initiatives, “Our students receive an applied public health professional and evidence-based practice orientation combined with a strong understanding of science and research.”

Expert faculty bring real-world experience to the online classroom.

University of Bridgeport is bringing relevant practitioners who will engage the future workforce of our country,” said Maritza Bond, MPH, director of public health for the city of New Haven and UB faculty member. “UB is an innovator in bringing a curriculum that efficiently delivers a program with impact while providing a foundation in policy and advocacy,” she said.

The MPH program also focuses on equity, inquiry, health, and well-being, as well as skill development for current and emerging leaders. Students will learn firsthand how to tackle a range of public health issues from acute and chronic illnesses to lifestyle and health behavior change, including maternal and child health, the opioid epidemic, Medicare for all, influenza, obesity, epidemics and pandemics, and other emerging health issues.

Since the 90s, UB has been a leader in online education. “We were one of the first institutions in the nation to offer a fully online program, nutrition, which focused on educating people with good nutrition and health. We are pleased to continue this tradition of excellence,” Cassirer said.

Program objectives align with the mission of Health People 2030 that promotes, strengthens, and evaluates the nation’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of all people.

The program may take as few as 12 to 15 months, although time to completion may vary per individual.

In large measure due to the aging population, the job outlook is excellent with the healthcare industry expected to experience the fastest employment growth between now and 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A bachelor’s degree does not need to be completed in any specific major for acceptance into this program. To learn more about the MPH program, email online@bridgeport.edu or call (475) 319-1331.
