student preparing for a snowstorm on campus

A College Student’s Guide to Surviving a Snowpocalypse

Major snowstorms can bring outages, travel issues, cancellations, and delays. If the forecast is calling for snow and dangerously cold temps, your future self would like a quick word.

By getting ahead of the weather, you can set yourself up to enjoy a cozy snow day (or two) rather than venturing into the elements to panic buy ramen and cocoa for your dorm room.

To help you get started, we’ve prepared a 10-minute snowpocalypse checklist to prepare you for a major snow event.

10-minute snowpocalypse checklist

  1. Charge everything: Phone, laptop, earbuds, and whatever keeps you functional. Don’t forget to charge your backup power packs and find your extension cord if your outlet situation is tragic.
  2. Download the LiveSafe App: Login with your UB credentials and remember to turn on notifications so you can receive important updates from us!
  3. Stay connected to official accounts: Keep an eye on UB’s official channels and website for any schedule or campus updates.
  4. Text your “check-in” people: Roommates, friends, family. Share your plan to weather the storm and confirm that you’re good with the folks thinking about you.
  5. Stock a few basics: Water, easy-to-eat food options, and any meds you may need. While the dining hall is made available during inclement weather, you may have a difficult time trekking through the storm and prefer to stay put for some dorm room dining.
  6. Dress for success: Warm layers, hats, gloves, boots (and an extra UB hoodie or two)

Commuters: Plan for travel and park in appropriate lots so UB’s Facilities team can clear snow effectively and safely.

Pro tip: Prepare like the snow is trying to inconvenience you personally. Because it is.

Food on the “I don’t want to walk anywhere” menu

Aim for low-effort, no drama options:

  • Protein bars, crackers, peanut butter and jelly, and trail mix
  • Soup cups, ramen, and oatmeal
  • A reusable water bottle filled and ready

If you have dietary needs or medications, make sure you are stocked before conditions worsen.

Snow: The one time fashion and function have to be friends

Clothing and gear that actually work:

  • Warm coat, hat, gloves
  • Waterproof boots or shoes with traction
  • Extra socks

If you need to pick up snow gear, consider this your reminder before the weather hits. And hey, if you “accidentally” end up at the campus bookstore looking for the hottest UB winter gear, we support your journey.

Stay informed

UB uses the LiveSafe app as part of its emergency and safety communications, with tools such as contacting Campus Security, sharing your location, and accessing emergency information.

  • Keep notifications on for official UB updates.
  • Check in periodically for announcements related to weather, campus operations, and safety guidance.

Get your updates from official sources (not your buddy who says it smells like snow outside).

Staying safe on campus

While walking on snow and ice, be sure to:

  • Take smaller, wider steps (walk like a penguin!).
  • Keep your hands in gloves and out of your pockets to protect yourself if you slip and fall.
  • Use well-traveled paths when possible.
  • Walk with a friend.

If you need assistance, contact Campus Security:

Commuter tips

Before you drive anywhere, be sure to:

  • Check conditions first and give yourself extra time (better yet, try to stay home until the roads are cleared).
  • Fill up your gas tank before the storm hits.
  • Keep your phone charged.
  • If you have a long commute, let someone know your timeline.

Campus parking:

  • Park in designated areas and follow campus guidance.
  • Avoid blocking lanes, corners, or access routes.

If you receive instructions to move your vehicle for snow clearing, do so as soon as possible so crews can clear safely.

Consider having a car kit:

  • Blanket, hat, gloves
  • Small shovel or ice scraper
  • Phone charger
  • Water and a snack

Have fun — but be smart

If you’re staying in:

  • Invite a couple of dorm friends over for cocoa, movie marathons, or board games.
  • Play snow day BINGO: Hot drink, cozy fit, one productive thing, one fun thing, and one nap (cross them all off your BINGO card!).

If you’re going outside:

  • Sledding and snow games are great, but avoid icy hills, roads, and unfamiliar areas.
  • Watch the wind chill. When it is frigid, short outings are smarter than long ones.

Quick recap

  • Charge your phone and laptop
  • Charge a power bank if you have one
  • Download LiveSafe and enable notifications
  • Check UB’s official channels for updates
  • Make a quick plan with your roommate, friends, or family

Stay warm, stay informed, and remember: Extreme cold is no joke.
