Greetings to the Class of 2023

Good afternoon everyone—parents, friends, and relatives—and a special welcome to all of you our newest students—the Class of 2023. On behalf of all our faculty and staff, we are so glad that you have joined our community of educators, scholars and researchers. We are gathered together today to celebrate your present and future and to introduce you to the values of our University.

Candlelight Vigil, March 29, 2019

The terrorist shootings at two mosques in New Zealand resulted in 50 people killed and 50 wounded; it became quickly evident that the perpetrator was acting from the sunken place of deep hatred. Acting quickly and effectively, prime minister Jacinda Ardern denounced his actions saying, “these are people I would describe as having extremist views that have absolutely no place in New Zealand, and in fact, have no place in the world.” One week later the Prime Minister banned assault rifles and established a national government gun buyback program.

It’s wonderful to be here with you this evening. I'd like to begin by thanking both Mickey and Dan for their past and current service to the community in their leadership positions with the BRBC. 

I will walk every day.

The reader may note that I use the future tense of this English modal verb. I will—no room here for won’t because that is not my intention—walk the beautiful park just a few steps from my home on a daily basis. Every day. I love the strong structural feeling that statement connotes. There, now that I’ve told you I will do this, it will be undoubtedly good for me.
