Diane Charles Named Special Assistant to the President
Diane Charles has been appointed the Special Assistant to the President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This important new job will work with the president, cabinet members, and UB community to identify areas of opportunity that will produce meaningful institutional change to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
“I am delighted to have Diane serving in this critically important role for the University of Bridgeport,” says President Stephen Healey. “Her experience, skill, and guidance in DEI will help ensure that the right conversations are taking place at the highest levels of the University of Bridgeport.’
In this senior advisor position, she will attend cabinet meetings, advocate for a DEI perspective, and encourage others on the Cabinet to do so. Along with reviewing policies and practices across the institution, she will engage with students, faculty, and staff to further a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus environment.
The U.S. Department of Education has encouraged institutions to seek to promote campus diversity and allocate the funds to do so. They believe we can help “make their campuses inclusive, safe, and hospitable environments where all students feel respected, to help ensure that everyone is able to pursue their educational opportunities to their fullest potential.”
Charles has already been serving as our Director of Title IX Compliance, Equity, and Inclusion and this new position will add to her growing role at the University. She has worked for many years as an attorney, with expertise in Title IX Compliance, and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Hofstra University and a Bachelors of Arts from Skidmore College.
“I am most looking forward to conversations with members of the University of Bridgeport community,” she says. “I want to hear their thoughts on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belongingness.”
