UB Votes Prepares Students for Their Civic Duty
The UB Votes Program is giving students the knowledge and tools to do their civic duty.
Young people are a smaller percentage of people who show up to vote, and many times college students are not registered yet. For those who have just turned 18, voting may not be part of their routine. Their job is further complicated by the fact that every state has different rules. COVID-19 has changed things, as well, and college students are not alone in finding the process difficult.
“They are figuring out who they are and what their values are,” says Melanie Strout, the Director of Civic Engagement. “And the process is intimidating.” In order to help, the UB Votes program has created a series of virtual election education events. These range from a trivia night to a debate watch party to civics workshops.
These events will provide students with greater context to make their decisions, and will stress the importance of getting involved in civil society. “We want them to understand that their votes matter,” says Kelli Meyer, Director of the Center for Student Involvement. “Not just for president but for senator, mayor, and every elected position.”
Events are open to all UB students, faculty, and staff.
