UB-Discovery Museum STEM-on-Wheels PPE Distribution Community Service Trips

The University of Bridgeport (UB) and Discovery Museum STEM-on-Wheels mobile laboratory will engage in community service this summer and early fall by delivering needed masks and hand sanitizers to Bridgeport community members in need.

STEM-on-Wheels is an outreach grant-sponsored program that was created by UB and the Discovery Museum. The program supports and enriches K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education with hands-on experiences in the community.  During the academic school year, UB staff and students and Discovery Museum staff travel with the STEM-on-Wheels bus to local elementary, middle and high schools and immerse students in exciting, interactive activities using technology typically not available in most classrooms.

As Connecticut reopened for business during the COVID-19 pandemic, the all-volunteer STEM-on-Wheels team agreed to engage in community service by delivering much needed personal protection equipment (PPE) to less fortunate members of the Bridgeport community. STEM-on-Wheels will make distribution visits geographically spread out to reach all parts of Bridgeport – north, south, east and west.

Behind the scenes, many have volunteered their time to raise funds, acquire, bundle and distribute the PPE supplies:

Ruba Deeb, PhD, director of UB-Discovery STEM-on-Wheels and her husband, Marcel Bou-Chachine
Khaled Elleithy, PhD, interim dean of the UB College of Engineering, Business and Education
Mark Pitcher, PhD, director of UB Health Sciences Inter-Professional Research
Julie Demers, UB Office of Advancement
Mohamed Mohamed, UB PhD student in Computer Science and Engineering
Jani Macari Pallis, PhD, UB associate professor of mechanical engineering
Terrance “Terry” O’Connor, UB Board of Trustees member and interim director of The Discovery Museum

Each event costs approximately $1000 for personal protective equipment and bus operation fees. Donations have been made by Israel and Paula Hersh; David Abbey and Deborah Goodman; Reverend Cass Shaw and the Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport; Dr. Hosam Afifi and the Bridgeport Islamic Community Center and The Discovery Museum. FEMA has donated supplies through the efforts of Terron Jones.

To support additional PPE supply distribution service trips in the Greater Bridgeport area, donations can be made to University of Bridgeport. Please place "For STEM-on-Wheels PPE" in the Memo portion of your check and mail to:
