UB staff are some Tough Mudders!

Attracted to mud? Addicted to danger? You may want to join the extreme sport sweeping University of Bridgeport staff at the next scheduled Tough Mudder in New England.

Larry Orman, director of communications and daughter Virginia Orman ’16 are so hooked they seem to beam with ever-more delight the tougher things get as they navigate the muddy and perilous obstacle course. The father-daughter pair fell into the Tough Mudder groove following Orman’s earlier father-son escapades with Sam Orman ’16. You can read about how it all began in the Fall/Winter issue of Knightlines (pp. 22).

Convinced this is really a “good for you” type of thing, Orman recruited colleagues Kelli Meyer, director of campus activities and civic engagement and Craig Lennon, assistant dean of students, for the Mud Mile mudder earlier this year. Tough Mudders had to slog through 10 miles of mud, which is a challenge in itself.

“I had a blast!” says Craig. “I didn’t train well for it but was determined to finish. When do you ever have an excuse to do something like this? But what I loved the most was the camaraderie. Strangers helping each other through mud, obstacles, and over walls. Men. Women. All ages and fitness levels. Some had teams, but everyone helped each other. It was inspiring to see and be a part of it all. I was truly moved.”

Adds Larry, “I still haven’t been able to completely get out all the fine silt in my shoes.”

Look out – Larry’s bound to be scouting for wannabe Tough Mudders over the holidays with next spring in mind! Curious? Email Larry to learn more.
