UB to pay tribute on October 10 to AGP brothers who died in Vietnam
They were a band of brothers at the University of Bridgeport who played on the football team, pledged at Alpha Gamma Phi, and wanted to serve in Vietnam.
All five were killed.
Now, nearly five decades later, during the 2015 Welcome Back Weekend to be held on campus from October 9-11, alumni John “Jack” Hulme ’68, John Corr ’66, Michael Dalton ’68, Charlie Yaghoobian, and Fran Sullivan ’66 will be honored at events in their memories.
At 11 a.m., October 10, UB will dedicate a plaque to commemorate the men at a new pocket park located on University Avenue next to Marina Dining Hall. The park has been created to honor all UB veterans, and the plaque was donated by former AGP fraternity brothers and the UB Alumni Association.
At 2 p.m., October 10, alumni and the public are invited to a special screening of “Searching for My Father,” the HBO documentary directed by filmmaker John Hulme, who was an infant when his father was killed in Vietnam. The searing documentary tells the story about John Hulme’s search to learn more about his father’s life at UB and the armed services. John Hulme and his mother Ellen, who is a UB alumna, will be present during the screening.
The UB alumni veterans’ events are among many scheduled for the 2015 Welcome Back Weekend. The three-day annual event expects to draw hundreds of alumni and their families, students, faculty, and staff to campus.
“We’re excited that so many people have been looking forward to this homecoming experience and this very special time to honor our veterans,” said Alumni Director Aimee Marcella. “Thanks to the dedication of former AGP member John Buckman ’68 and fraternity president Bob Padula ’68, we are able to see these alumni honored and have a significant place on campus for all of our alumni who are veterans. UB is proud to honor their service.”
