Commencement for UB health sciences graduates to be held Sunday, May 13

Graduation ceremonies for nearly 170 students from the University of Bridgeport Division of Health Sciences will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, May 13 at the Mertens Theater in the Arnold Bernhard Center.

The Class of 2012 represents master’s degree or professional doctoral graduates from the Acupuncture Institute, College of Chiropractic, College of Naturopathic Medicine, Fones School of Dental Hygiene, and the Human Nutrition Institute.

“These newest of health care providers have shown tremendous dedication and perseverance during their studies and clinical training and are now ready to help meet the significant challenges of today’s health care environment,” said Health Sciences Division Vice Provost Dr. David Brady. “We are also looking forward to having Dr. Peter D’Adamo, New York Times-bestselling author and director of the new Center of Excellence in Generative Medicine at UB, as our renowned commencement speaker.”

In addition to Sunday’s Commencement, some of the health institutes are hosting awards luncheons for their respective students.

On Friday, the College of Naturopathic Medicine will award five $1,000 scholarships to graduates, including two Clinical Excellence Awards, two Academic Excellence Awards, and an Outstanding Service Award. The prizes have been “generously underwritten by Douglas Labs in Pennsylvania,” said College of Naturopathic Medicine Dean Dr. Elizabeth Pimentel.

The Acupuncture Institute will award a Shanghai/China Study Scholarship on Friday. This is the first time the scholarship has been awarded and it will send Meghan Gonick, who will graduate in December 2012, to spend two weeks doing hospital rounds at Shanghai Chinese Medicine Hospital this summer. The Acupuncture Institute will also present graduating senior Michelle Hessberger with its Director’s Award. Student Yan Huo will receive the Golden Needle Award.

Four College of Chiropractic graduates were honored on May 8: Lauren Austen-McClellan won the Academic Achievement Award, Brian Murphy won Clinical Achievement, and Kenhinde Odeyale and Emma Summers were presented with Dean’s Awards.
