UB students return to campus, crew wrap up clean up after Hurricane Irene

Students returned to residence halls and crews began cleaning up minimal damage caused Hurricane Irene on Monday, when campus administrative offices opened as usual, and faculty and staff readied for the start of the new academic year.

Roughly 300 freshmen who had been evacuated to Sacred Heart University over the weekend returned to UB residence halls on Sunday evening – just in time for dinner at Marina Dining Hall.

Their return on Sunday was a day earlier than anticipated and possible thanks to extensive storm-preparation measures that helped minimize damage, said Vice President for Facilities George Estrada.

“Our University crews have completed a remarkable recovery, working aggressively to restore campus and make it fully operational in the last 24 hours,” said Estrada. “They did an amazing job.”

The hurricane damaged the roof on Bodine Hall but it was being repaired on Monday.  Storm-related flooding also “affected some lower-level buildings but is being addressed,” said Estrada. The worst may be the branches and leaves that littered the campus, but crews quickly began clean-up and should be finished with the work by Tuesday.
