New book by Dr. Gerard Mullin, UB alumnus and doctor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, aims to help millions of Americans suffering from gastrointestinal disease.
You’re not alone. In fact, gastrointestinal complaints account for nearly one third of all visits to primary care doctors, and one in six Americans suffer from digestive disorders like celiac and Crohn’s diseases, reflux (GERD), and irritable bowel syndrome.
Integrative Gastroenterology, a new book edited by Dr. Gerard E. Mullin and just released by Oxford University Press, aims to help doctors treat increasingly common gastrointestinal diseases.
Mullin, who teaches and practices medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, is an alumnus of University of Bridgeport Human Nutrition Institute.
The book contains chapters from a panel of international leading experts, including Dr. David M. Brady, vice provost of the UB health sciences division, to provide for the first time ever information about both integrative and standard medical solutions for the most common gastrointestinal disorders.
Treatments include pharmaceuticals to naturopathic supplements, dietary solutions, lifestyle changes, acupuncture, and mind-body medicine. In discussing unconventional treatments, the authors present scientific evidence for many of the remedies that have proven to be effective.
Dr. Brady, who also is director of the UB’s Human Nutrition Institute, contributed two chapters on “Fibromyalgia and Gastrointestinal Disorders” and “Alternative Laboratory Testing for Gastrointestinal Diseases.”
