UB walkathon organizers present more than $1,600 to the Center for Women and Families
Every step counted, and on Friday, University of Bridgeport officials presented to the Center for Women and Families of Eastern Fairfield County $1,600 raised during a university-sponsored walkathon in support of the non-profit.
“Our students, faculty, and staff have long reached out to make a positive impact on the community. In fact, UB students each year contribute nearly 50,000 hours of volunteer work valued at $1.4 million in Bridgeport and the surrounding community,” said Mary-Jane Foster, vice president of university relations. “The walkathon is reflective of our commitment to serve, and as one of the participants who tied up my sneakers, I can personally say it was a great pleasure to support the Center’s most-important work to improve the lives of those affected by violence.”
Held on April 15, during National Sexual-Assault Awareness Month, the three-mile walkathon attracted more than 100 participants, including Connecticut First Lady Cathy Malloy. A total of $1,900 was raised. Some student clubs previously presented the Center with funds its members had personally raised.
All proceeds from the event will support the Center’s 24-hour bilingual domestic violence and rape hot lines, emergency shelter, community education, victim advocacy, counseling services, and other programs. The Center serves the communities of Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford, and Trumbull.
Debra Greenwood, chief executive officer of the Center, reiterated her thanks to UB, saying walkathon funds greatly help the agency support sexual-assault victims in Bridgeport and the surrounding area.
