UB School of Business and Trumbull Library to offer free personal finance workshops on Oct. 26 and Nov. 21

The University of Bridgeport School of Business and Trumbull Library will offer two free talks aimed at helping individuals better manage their money, plan for retirement, and tackle financial issues such as paying off debt, saving for college, and investing.

Both lectures will be held at the Trumbull Library’s Community Room, located at 33 Quality Street, Trumbull, CT. For information call (203) 452-5197.

“What Every Person Should Know: Understanding Your Personal Finances” will be held on Tuesday, October 26 at 7 p.m. The presentation by UB School of Business Assistant Dean Ward Thrasher will present simple yet effective steps individuals can take to reduce debt and expenses and increase savings, all without making dramatic changes in lifestyle.

“Financial Management in Retirement” will be held on Sunday November 21 at 2 p.m. and will be presented by James S. Sagner, senior managing principal of Sagner/Marks, a treasury management consulting firm and a professor at UB’s MBA program. He will review basic asset categories and their valuation, including cash and short-term funds, bonds, and stocks to help individuals make the most appropriate investment choices for retirement. He will compare returns for each investment type and then discuss information your retirement plan will require.

Nicole Cignoli, director of events at the library, said the talks “fill a need” in the community.

“Our patrons have told the library that they would like us to provide workshops where they can learn more about managing their personal finances outside of the public sector. I think they’ll be very pleased with what we’ve come up with,” Cignoli said. “We’ve put together a great series of expert speakers who will share their knowledge and answer questions so individuals can make more informed decisions about money.”

Ward Thrasher has worked as COO at various firms and has consulted for GE Capital, BancBoston, Boston Financial Group, Hallmark Entertainment, among other firms. He holds professional licenses and certifications in insurance, financial services, law and technology.

James Sagner previously led the Consulting Services Division of First National Bank of Chicago (now J.P. Morgan Chase) and managed over 250 large-scale studies for banks, hospitals, securities firms, leading insurance companies, manufacturing and service organizations. His latest book, Essentials of Working Capital Management, is being published by John Wiley & Sons in November 2010.
