A Storied History

Shuttered and sealed since the 1990s, the eight-lane bowling alley in the basement of the John J. Cox Student Center was once a campus landmark. On June 1, 1961, the $1.4 million Alumni Hall was opened as the new hub for visitors, and was "the heart of all social, cultural and recreational activities," according to The Scribe. In addition to activities such as table tennis and billiards, Alumni Hall featured a bowling alley with organized league play and bowling classes offered in various degree programs.

After three decades, the alley was closed and became a campus legend, with alumni and former staff holding the only memories of the lanes.

Until Now...

On Homecoming Weekend 2018, President Laura Skandera Trombley gave her first State of the University Address, during which she unveiled plans to crowdfund the reopening of the long-shuttered alley.

"I've never seen so many people excited about bowling!" Trombley said. "The revived bowling alley is part of a campaign to expand opportunities for students to become more deeply involved."

With two major gifts to lead the renovation project, and through the generosity of our donors, the campus favorite officially reopened in the John J. Cox Student Center during Homecoming Weekend 2019.

Homecoming Bowling Tournament

See some of our favorite photos from the bowling tournament during Homecoming 2019. Throughout the weekend, we played 395 games of bowling and crowned our Homecoming Bowling Tournament Champions, Sanjay Singh Bishnoi '20 and Atharv Sharma '20.
