Xingguo Xiong is an associate professor in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Bridgeport, CT. He obtained his B.S. in Physics in 1994 from Wuhan University, China. He obtained his first Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in July 1999 from Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. He obtained his second Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering in July 2005 from University of Cincinnati, OH, USA. His research areas include MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems), nanotechnology, as well as low power VLSI design and VLSI testing. He is the recipient of the 2009 Northeast ASEE (American Society of Engineering Education) Outstanding Teacher Award.

  • Design, simulation, fabrication and testing of novel MEMS (Microelectro mechanical Systems) devices, microsensors and microactuators. Areas include inertial MEMS sensors (accelerometers, gyroscopes), RF MEMS, Optical MEMS (micromirrors, optical switches), Bio MEMS (Micropumps, micromixers), Digital Microfluidic Biochips (DMFBs).
  • Low power VLSI design, VLSI testing, as well as analog and mixed signal circuit design for MEMS/NEMS-based System-on-Chip (SoC) application.
  • Nanotechnology and NEMS (Nanoelectromechanical Systems), quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) based nanoelectronic circuits, carbon nanotube (CNT) based nanosensors for medical applications.

Funding from US Department of Energy (DoE) under program of Strategic Training and Education in Power Systems (STEPS – Topic A), Funding Opportunity Number: DE-FOA-0000152 entitled Workforce Training for the Electric Power Sector. The proposal was submitted by a Nationwide Consortium of Universities, led by the University of Minnesota, to Revitalize Electric Power Engineering Education by State-of-the-Art Laboratories, of which Prof. Linfeng Zhang and Prof. Xingguo Xiong are joint representatives of University of Bridgeport as a member of the consortium. Status: funded on 04/08/2010 for 3 years, Recovery Act Funding received: $2,500,000. Total project value including cost share: $4,175,423, funds received from University of Bridgeport (Prof. Xingguo Xiong and Professor Zhang): $37,500 ($25,000 from the consortium and $12,500 matching fund from University of Bridgeport).

ESMD (Exploration Systems Mission Directorate) National Design Challenge Project Grant from NASA Connecticut Space Grant College Consortium. The grant was awarded to UB excavator team for NASA 1st lunabotics mining competition in Kennedy Space Center, FL on May 27-28, 2010. Status: funded, Funding amount: $8776.42 (Among it, $4500 was from NASA CT Space consortium, and $4276.42 from UB School of Engineering).
