The University of Bridgeport is partnering with Google to provide email accounts for students.

Important Dates and Timeline for the UBmail Launch

As new email accounts are activated, service will not be available for up to 12 hours. The table below outlines service availability.

Beginning May 23, 2013 at 6:00 pm

Email will not be available to you for a 12-hour period. You will not be able to send or receive email.

May 24, 2013 at 6:01 am

All incoming email will be delivered to your new UBmail (@my.bridgeport.edu) account.

 

You can access your old webmail to retrieve and move contents to your UBmail account. Notify your contacts of your new email address.

Your old webmail account (Bridgeport.edu) will no longer be accessible. Email addressed to your @bridgeport.edu address will no longer be forwarded to your UBmail (@my.bridgeport.edu) address.

Here’s what you need to do to be up and running with your new UBmail…

> Notify your contacts of your new UBmail address (yourusername@my.bridgeport.edu). UB faculty and staff will have your new address information automatically. (Remember, we will forward bridgeport.edu incoming email to your UBmail account up to February 28, 2014.)

> Update your shortcuts with the new UBmail address https://mail.google.com/a/my.bridgeport.edu

> Start moving your old webmail to your new UBmail. There’s no time like the present to clean out your old webmail account and move your important content to your new UBmail account.

Will my email address change?

Yes, effective May 24, 2013 your new email address is “yourusername@my.bridgeport.edu”.

What will happen to email that is addressed to me using my old email address?

Beginning May 24, 2013, incoming email addressed to “yourusername@bridgeport.edu” will be forwarded to your new email address.

What will happen to my email that is addressed to my old webmail (@bridgeport.edu) address?

Email that is addressed to your old webmail address will be forwarded to your new email up to February 28, 2014. After that date, email addressed to your old email will rejected. All contacts must be notified of your @my.bridgeport.edu address prior to this date to ensure delivery of email.

How do I access my UBmail account?

Access your UBmail account directly by visiting https://mail.google.com/a/my.bridgeport.edu. You can also access your account by visiting the Portal

Will my email account or address change when I graduate or leave University of Bridgeport?

You will continue to have the same email address, yourusername@my.bridgeport.edu for life.*

Will email addresses for faculty and staff change?

Faculty and staff will remain on their current, Microsoft Exchange email platform, therefore, their email addresses will remain the same (@bridgeport.edu). Only students and alumni are moving to UBmail.

If I am an employee of the University who attends classes, will I receive a UBmail account and have two email accounts?

Employees of the University will have only one email account, which is the Exchange email platform that was implemented in late 2012 and early 2013. *Email for life is subject to the terms and conditions of Google.

Can I access my account using an email program such as Outlook (via POP or IMAP)?

To configure your email program (such as Outlook or Mac Mail) to read your UBmail account:

  1. First, make sure you have a password to log into UBNet or the Portal.
  2. Then, enable IMAP in your UBmail account and set a password directly with Google for IMAP access (See below for more information).
  3. Lastly, insert the appropriate UBmail IMAP settings into your email program’s configuration screen. (If you need help, Gmail’s Help provides detailed instructions for which value goes where in your particular email program.)

How do I enable IMAP on my UBmail account?

To enable IMAP on your UBmail account, follow the steps below.

  1. Click on the gear icon in the upper right
  2. Click Settings then Forwarding and POP/IMAP
  3. Select Enable IMAP
  4. Click Save Changes
  5. Now that you have enabled IMAP, you will need to setup your IMAP Password.

How can I change my IMAP password?

Now that you have enabled IMAP, follow the steps below to change your IMAP password from within your UBmail account.

  1. In the upper right corner where your account name appears, select the drop down arrow and then
  2. Select Security
  3. Select Change Password
  4. You will be prompted to enter your current UBNet username and password and then you will need to enter a new password that is not the same as your UBNet password.

Important Notes: Allow up to 90 minutes for your IMAP password to process. This will change your IMAP account password ONLY and will not change your UBNet password.

Once I setup my IMAP password, when do I use that password versus my UBNet password?

IMAP Passwords are needed to use an application on the phone/tablet (Gmail, Drive etc…), or phone/tablet built-in mail application (anything "not-browser").

Your UBNet password will work with any UBMail application while you access it through a web browser (even on a mobile device).

How do I access my UBmail on my smartphone?

To configure your smartphone or mobile device to read your UBmail account:

  1. First, make sure you have a password to log into UBNet or the Portal.
  2. Then, enable IMAP in your UBmail account and set a password directly with Google for IMAP access. (Note, it may take up to 90 minutes for your IMAP password to change in order to complete the setup of your mobile device.)
  3. Lastly, insert the appropriate UBmail IMAP settings into your email program’s configuration screen.

To configure the "Email" app on an Android device for access to Gmail, just follow the steps below:

Be sure you have enabled IMAP in your Gmail settings and you have changed your IMAP password.

  1. On your phone, press Home , then open the Email application.
  2. On the 'Your accounts' page, select Next to get started with setup.
  3. Enter your full Gmail address and IMAP password, then select Next.
  4. On the next screen, you can give the account a nickname and choose the name to display on your outgoing messages. Tap Done.
  5. And you're done. You can verify your settings from the Inbox view by tapping Menu - Account settings.

To configure the "Mail" app on an Apple device for access to Gmail, just follow these steps:

Be sure you have enabled IMAP in your Gmail settings and you have changed your IMAP password.

  1. Open the Settings app on your device
  2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Tap Add Account...
  4. Tap Gmail
  5. Enter your account information, being sure to use your full Gmail address, including '@my.bridgeport.edu'
  6. Tap Next
  7. Tap Save

How do I forward my UBmail to another account?

If you want your UBmail to be delivered to your personal Gmail account, simply configure a forward in your UBmail account.

  1. Click on the gear icon in the upper right
  2. Click Settings then Forwarding and POP/IMAP
  3. Select the Add a forwarding address button
  4. Enter the address to which you would like to forward your UBmail
  5. Select Confirm

How do I configure my IMAP client application such as Outlook, Outlook Express or Thunderbird to view both my old webmail and new UBmail?

If you are using an IMAP client application such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Apple Mail or Thunderbird, please visit Gmail’s Help for detailed instructions.

How can I access my email received prior to May 24, 2013?

To access your old email (received prior to May 24, 2013), visit http://webmail.bridgeport.edu or visit the UB Portal, which contains all the links necessary for your current and old email.

How do I move my old email into my new email?

If you are using an IMAP client application such as Outlook, Outlook Express or Thunderbird, you can move your old email into your new email box by selecting the email and “dragging and dropping” it into your new email box.

If you do not use an IMAP client application such as one of those noted above, you can send an email to yourself and attach a few emails to it. The size limit for sending is 20MB, however, emailing attachments with images may result in the email size being significantly larger than the original message itself.

How do move my contacts from my old email account into my new email account?

To export your contacts from your old webmail account, select Addresses and Export to csv file under the Address book export section. Save the csv file to your desktop.

From your UBmail account, select Contacts then Import Contacts. You will be promoted to select the csv file that was created from your webmail account. Follow the steps to complete the import process.

How can I be logged into my UBmail account and another Gmail account at the same time?

You are not permitted to be logged into more than one Google account at a time in the same Web browser, unless you enable an optional feature to log into multiple accounts simultaneously. You must activate this for each of your Gmail accounts if you wish to be able to be logged into your UBmail and personal Google accounts at the same time in the same Web browser.
