Promoting Wellness and Health

 

Our focus is helping you develop and maintain a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Our environment and programs are stimulating, challenging, and inviting.

Our recreational and sports programs are aimed at promoting wellness among the students, faculty, staff, and UB community. Recreation and leisure activities offered at UB focus on integrating mind and body through positive traditional and non-traditional recreation and sports activities.

The Wheeler Recreation Center provides the students, faculty, staff, and the greater Bridgeport community with recreational and fitness opportunities that are geared to increase an individual’s overall health and well-being.

Separate locker rooms are provided for men and women with saunas, and a co-ed steam room located on the pool deck. The Recreation Center offers a variety of recreational programming consisting of six intramural sports and wellness programs.

Our facilities include:

  • 6-lane 25-meter swimming pool
  • 3 multipurpose courts for activities such as volleyball, tennis, Co-ed soccer, cricket, and basketball
  • Weight room
  • Martial arts studio
  • Racquetball court

Wheeler Recreation Center Schedule and Hours

Regular hours

Monday – Thursday 6:30 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Friday 6:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Saturday – Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Come burn off those calories with a great workout on any one of our 13 pieces of Cardio equipment. (3 treadmills, 3 ellipticals, 2 stair steps, 2 incline bikes, stationary bike, & 2 rowers.) The Cardio-Theater is equipped with 3 TV’s to watch your favorite shows as well.

Pump some iron in our newly renovated Weight room. We offer the following stationary machines: (shoulder press, chest press, bicep curl, leg extension, seated leg curl, lat pull-down, bench press, cable motion dual adjustable pulley, & a multipurpose bench and squat machine.) Also a part of our weight room: (fitness bars, medicine balls, stability balls, & dumbbells ranging from 1 pound to 50 pounds.)

Yogalates

Using only your own body weight and gravity. This class is a combination of Yoga and Pilates! Yogalates will tone and strengthen your entire body. Classes will focus on integrating the entire body, rather than exercising each body part separately. As you begin to focus on your body as a whole you’ll achieve better alignment and teach your body to work more efficiently.

Step Up & Jump/Aerobics

Boost your cardio while burning fat and strengthening your legs with this demanding aerobic and anaerobic work-out using plyometrics and explosive foot work. This class will meet once a week.

All Levels Yoga

This class is perfect for a new student and challenges will also be offered for the intermediate student. This class will include breathing, postures and meditation to create strength, openness and flexibility. You will leave feeling fantastic!

Cardio Kickboxing

This electric class of martial arts and boxing movements will bring your cardio fitness to the next level while defining and shaping your body and self confidence! Cardio Kickboxing will knock you out!

Walking Program

This program offers an opportunity to get a walking visual of Seaside Park as well as burning calories. Each day the faculty, staff, students, and UB community members will walk a different course ranging from 1.8 miles up to 4.8 miles. Come walk your way to satisfaction!
