Community Service

You have talents and skills that others would really appreciate. Let us help you put them to good work – literally. The Office of Campus Activities and Civic Engagement serves as a catalyst for students, staff, faculty, and administrators to connect with, build, and sustain meaningful service initiatives in the greater Bridgeport area.

Make a difference in the world! Community Service comes in all different styles and sizes at UB. Are you concerned about the environment? Do you like working with children? We have the opportunity that matches your preferences. Meet people just like you while you contribute to something greater than yourself. You will find that giving is the best reward.

  • Help someone in need
  • Motivate others
  • Devote time, energy, and skills
  • Broaden your horizons
  • Gain important life experience
  • Meet new people
  • HAVE FUN!

Whether you’re an individual, part of a student group or residence hall, someone who wishes to contribute to a particular project periodically, or someone who would like to initiate their own project in the community, the Office of Campus Activities and Civic Engagement can help.

The Office of Campus Activities and Civic Engagement is located in the John J. Cox Student Center, Room 231 or please feel free to contact us at 203-576-4274 or jenniftu@bridgeport.edu.

UB’s Alternative Spring Break is an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, serve others, and gain unique perspectives on cultural, political, and social issues. ASB prides itself on helping participants build leadership skills, engage in unfamiliar communities, and develop critical thinking skills based on cultural experience.

To apply, look for the application opening at the Fall Activity Fair. Applications are due by the end of September, followed by interviews with the Selection Committee in early October. Team meetings and fundraising begins immediately after decisions are reached. To maintain an effective and close-knit group, ASB is capped at 12 participants. The trip destination is announced at the first team meeting.

Before departure, participants receive training in how to serve effectively and can expect their days on ASB to be full of physical work, reflection and discussion activities, and cultural sightseeing trips.

Accommodations on the trip are generally modest (typically a church or volunteer center) provided by the service site. Participants should bring a sleeping bag or sheets/blanket, towel, and toiletry items. Communal meals will be served with dietary needs accommodated.

For more information on Alternative Spring Break, please contact Civic Engagement Coordinator Jennifer Turner at jenniftu@bridgeport.edu
