Six colleges accepted Delia Amsterdam, but UB stole her heart.
“It was beautiful!” says Amerstdam, who is senior class president. “I fell in love with the campus and the atmosphere and the people.”
Amsterdam’s enthusiasm for the University has intensified over time. A native of Irvington, New Jersey, who will graduate with a bachelor’s in psychology and human services, she helped found the University’s Cheerleading Squad to help foster school spirit.
“My greatest memory at UB is the first time I cheered. We’re a diverse school, but that day we cheered for the basketball team at Harbor Yard— we all came together. There was so much school pride,” says Amersterdam, 21.
When not revving up the crowd at athletic events, Amsterdam gave tours for the admissions office, planned events with the campus activities office, and signed on to various clubs. She was president of the Latin American Club, for example, and was junior class president in 2010-11. Off campus, she interned at Greater Bridgeport Adolescent Pregnancy Program, or GBAPP, running HIV-prevention programs geared to college students and other young people.
Those experiences inspired Amsterdam to pursue a career in higher education, and she returns to UB in the fall to earn a master’s degree in counseling with a concentration in college student personnel . “I want to work in a college environment with campus activities or residential life,” she says. “It’s like the UB billboards, the ones that said, ‘What will UBecome?’ Well, UB has definitely helped shape the person I am today.”
