Haiti Earthquake Recovery Internship

I was given the opportunity to participate as a volunteer Peacekeeper in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Port-au-Prince, Haiti during May-June, 2010 assisting the victims of the disastrous earthquake which devastated that country in January 2010. This opportunity was possible due to a special arrangement from the Nepalese Army Headquarters. I participated in the mission representing the Nepalese Army and it also served as an Internship for my Master’s program.

My Peacekeeping Experience

I was assigned to work with both the Nepalese contingents and also with other Staff Officers in MINUSTAH HQ.  The major activities in the mission were as follows: Foot Patrolling, Vehicle Patrolling, VIP Escorting, Installation Security, Food and non-food items distribution, and IDP Camp security.

Apart from my duties within the boundaries of the Mission, I also conducted my own research about the post-earthquake scenario in Port-au-Prince by interviewing the Staff Officers in MINUSTAH HQ, by interviewing locals with the help of translators and some government officials. I also gathered information about the conflict in Haiti and the political instability.

I couldn’t be more proud representing the University of Bridgeport as well as the Nepalese Army during my Peacekeeping mission in Haiti.
