Who Should Attend Courses Registration Info


The summer seminars in Psychotherapy and Counseling are designed for professional education and growth. Since 1998, the summer seminars have provided continuing education to psychotherapists, social workers, educators and human service professionals. The Psychotherapy and Counseling seminars offer a wealth of opportunities for continuing education to professionals and the wider mental health community. This year, six stimulating seminars on state-of-the-art topics in counseling and psychotherapy are offered in a variety of formats that will appeal to the working practitioner, as well as graduate students. The seminars can be taken for graduate credit or continuing education units (CEUs).


Who should attend?

You, if you are a counselor, social worker, psychologist, psychiatric nurse or other mental health/human service professional. You will find the information related to counseling and psychotherapy innovative and specifically related to your area of expertise. Teachers and school administrators will find the issues important in classroom effectiveness and student care and counseling.


Courses

  • SEXUALITY & COUNSELING

    This seminar is developed for counselors, teachers, and human service professionals on issues of sexuality, sexual orientation, sexual abuse and violence, and sexual trauma, as well as a cultural/worldview related to counseling and sexual development. A lifespan developmental approach is used to review human behavior relative to sexuality, values clarification, spiritual and emotional responses to sexual issues, and STDs/AIDS. Examples and illustration are used from all age groups - adolescents, young adults, midlife adults, and older adults - and developed through various methods to include lecture, role-play or case studies, films, readings, and general discussions.

    Instructor: Dr. Catherine Roland is an Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas and the current editor of the national journal, ADULTSPAN: Development Through Young, Middle, & Older Adulthood.

  • CRISIS MANAGEMENT IN RESPONSE TO WORLD/COMMUNITY DISASTERS

    In this seminar, different types of disasters at a global and local level, both man-made and natural, will be examined. An emphasis will be placed on effective ways for counseling and human services professionals to respond. The various phases of a disaster will be explored in terms of human emotional and physical reactions, immediate actions to be taken, and ways to ameliorate the long-term effects. The needs of special populations such as children, and physically/emotionally challenged individuals will also be explored.

    Instructor: Dr. Howard Smith is the American Counseling Association's (ACA) Associate Executive Director for Professional Affairs.

  • ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEMS
    3 credits or 2.5 C.E.U    Sat, Sun    May 18, 19, Jun 15, 22    9:00 - 4:00

    This seminar is designed for practitioners, human service administrators, and graduate students to enhance their ability to manage and direct mental health and human service agencies. Sample topics to be covered include: program development, grant writing, state and federal funding, case management, human resource management, state and federal policies, and social advocacy/community networking.

    Instructor: Dr. Ralle Greenberg is the Director of Social Services at Leeway, Inc., a nonprofit, inpatient facility for HIV/AIDS patients and an adjunct professor for the counseling program at the University of Bridgeport.

  • INTRODUCTION TO RATIONAL EMOTIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

    Cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to be highly effective in the treatment of many types of client problems. This seminar will offer cognitive, emotive, and behavioral techniques to motivate clients to change and to help them maintain that change in a variety of areas, from alcohol and substance abuse to relationship dependency.

    Instructor: Dr. Janet Wolfe, the former Executive Director of the Albert Ellis Institute, has presented numerous seminars, and has published widely on cognitive behavior therapy.

  • STRATEGIES FOR STRESS MANAGEMENT

    This seminar is designed for professionals who work in the field of human services either as counselors, administrators, or educators. The course offers creative, constructive strategies for handling stress that will enable us to better serve clients, students, and ourselves.

    Instructor: Donna Phillips, M.A. is the Faculty Advisor for the Human Services program at the University of Bridgeport.

  • ETHICS & THE PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR
    3 credits or 2.5 C.E.UWMay 15-June 125:30 - 9:30

    This seminar is designed for practitioners and students to better understand ethics, the law, and licensure/certification for counselors, as well as professional issues in becoming a licensed professional counselor (LPC).

    Instructor: Dr. Larry Burlew, LPC is a Professor in Counseling & HR at the University of Bridgeport, the current President of the Association for Adult Development and Aging, and co-editor of the new text, Sexuality Counseling.

    The times and days of each seminar vary depending on the topic, so please review the times carefully. All seminars will be held at the University of Bridgeport in Carlson Hall at 303 Park Avenue, Bridgeport, CT. The University of Bridgeport campus is located adjacent to Seaside Park on the shores of Long Island Sound.

  • Fees
    The cost for Continuing Education Units is $100.00 per unit. The cost for Graduate Credit Hours is $385 per credit hour. Participants will receive a certificate of completion for CEUs and an academic transcript for graduate credit.
