University of BridgeportFounded in 1927 and renown for its cultural and academic diversity, the University of Bridgeport (UB) is a student-centered, career-focused, private university located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. We are seeking in our 10th President a dynamic, strategic, and transformational leader to usher in a future of sustainable growth, innovation, and impact. In addition to galvanizing the UB community around a distinctive course for the University’s future, our new President will be charged with attracting broad philanthropic support, building strong partnerships, enhancing student success, and furthering UB’s commitment to global education.

The President will be expected to champion the University of Bridgeport’s mission and serve as its persuasive and dynamic ambassador locally, nationally, and internationally.

With an operating budget of $100M, UB enrolls approximately 5,300 students across 14 schools, colleges, and institutes that offer 33 undergraduate programs and 31 graduate programs. Its 144 full-time and 373 part-time faculty members take great pride in preparing students for success in their careers from day one.

Growth has been strong in the health sciences, especially the newly established School of Nursing. The School of Engineering, a distinctive school for a university the size of UB with a vibrant research culture, offers two Ph.D. programs and a range of masters and bachelors programs. Schools of Arts and Sciences, Public and International Affairs, Education, Business, and Design have maintained strength through strong teaching and responsive programming. The faculty and academic leadership work together constructively to develop novel programs and curricula.

Situated on an expansive shoreline, recent campus renovations and acquisitions have solidified UB as an integral part of the City of Bridgeport. The University’s center in Waterbury plus growing online programs ensure that UB’s reach extends into the rest of the state and beyond. The University has a strong tradition of enrolling talented international undergraduate and graduate students.

The University of Bridgeport’s next President will bring a keen sense of the landscape of higher education and small private universities as well as an appreciation for delivering education in an urban setting. He or she will be an inspiring team builder, powerful communicator and fundraiser, collaborative problem-solver, and adroit fiscal manager. Candidates should possess a distinguished record of senior leadership experience and professional achievement in higher education or an equivalent level of responsibility in business, government, or not-for-profit enterprises. A sophisticated sense of the opportunities and challenges facing regional, private universities and a passion for their purposes are essential.

Presidential Search Committee Update

July 31, 2017

Dear UB Community:

I’d like to provide you with an update on the presidential search process.

As previously announced, the University has appointed a nine-member search committee (six Trustees, two Faculty, and one Administrator) to conduct the search for the next president of the University of Bridgeport. As a member of the Board of Trustees, I was asked to Chair the Committee by Board Co-Chair Frank Zullo. In mid-July, the search committee met to interview several executive search firms for consideration to assist us with the recruitment process. I am pleased to report that the national executive search firm Isaacson, Miller (IM) has been retained for the assignment. Isaacson, Miller is a preeminent firm in higher education recruitment, having placed presidents and other senior leaders in the full range of public and private colleges and universities across the country.

Sheryl Ash, Vice President of IM, will be leading the search with Lionel Anderson, Senior Associate. Over a 20-year career at Isaacson, Miller, Sheryl Ash has worked with numerous boards of trustees on the recruitment of presidents for colleges, universities, foundations, and other nonprofit organizations. Her recent higher education presidencies include Sarah Lawrence College, Marist College, Vassar College, and City University of New York (CUNY). Her other recent clients in higher education include Arizona State University, Northeastern University, the University of Michigan, the University of Pennsylvania.

The search consultants will be visiting the campus in early September to learn more about the challenges and opportunities for the next president, and the qualifications that are desired in presidential candidates at this stage of our institution’s development. More information about these next steps in the search process will be forthcoming, and I will keep the UB community updated on a regular basis.

Search Committee Interim Report

November 16, 2017

Dear UB Community:

During the course of the last several months, Isaacson, Miller, our consultants, have met with the search committee and the Board of Trustees, held campus listening sessions in September, co-authored a presidential position profile with the Board, and are now actively recruiting to find a worthy successor to Neil Salonen.

While we are still very much a work in progress, we remain on schedule to hold committee interviews with prospective applicants during the month of February.
