Kenneth and Lancy Gray Memorial Scholarship  

This Scholarship is to honor the lives and contributions of a father and his beloved daughter who lived with a commitment to promote dialogue, appreciation and understanding amongst the peoples of the worlds. Dr. Gray traveled and lectured in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. His daughter Lancy was inspired by the example of her parents and from a young age aspired to be a world citizen.

Dr. Kenneth Gray served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Bridgeport from 1992 until his passing in 2007. He served as the Co-Chair of the Board’s Academic Affairs Committee. A two time Senior Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Gray served as the Eminent Scholar Chair Professor of International Management at the School of Business & Industry, Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, Florida. He served as an editorial board member of three international academic journals, The International Journal on World Peace, Journal of Entrepreneurship and Management, and The Journal of African Business and is the author of numerous books and journals. In 2005 he co-authored Corporate Scandals: The Many Faces of Greed (Paragon House). He was recognized by his colleagues as an exceptional scholar, as a man deeply committed to intercultural understanding and as an example of academic and personal integrity.  Dr. Kenneth and his wife Dr. Doris Gray initially created this scholarship in 2000 to commemorate their daughter Lancy after her passing. Dr. Gray is survived by his wife Dr. Doris Gray who is a Professor of French and Women’s Studies at Florda State Univeristy and by his daughters Tunuka and Khadijah.

 Lancy Amelie Gray, Kenneth and Doris’ daughter, was born in Kenya in 1985 and suffered a fatal car crash in Morocco in 2000. Lancy, a gifted writer who was fluent in several languages, learned at an early age how to move freely in various cultures. She attended schools in Kenya, the United States, Germany and Morocco. By the time she was 15 years old, she spoke German, English and French and had a basic knowledge of Arabic. Lancy was an accomplished cellist and played in an orchestra. She intended to study cultural anthropology and world religions.
 

Guidelines for the Dr. Kenneth R. and Lancy A. Gray Scholarship

To be eligible for the Kenneth R. and Lancy A. Gray essay contest, current UB  undergraduates and incoming freshman and/or transfers need to fulfill the  following criteria:
 
 1. Be a new accepted freshman or transfer student or a current UB student in
 good academic standing.
 2. Have a demonstrated need for financial assistance based on existing FAFSA
 and University of Bridgeport standards.
 3. Have an interest in fostering understanding amongst people of different
 cultures.
 4. Write and submit an essay of 600 words or more on the topic “Fostering
 understanding amongst People of Different Cultures.” The essay must be
 submitted to Dr. Thomas Ward, Vice President for International Programs in
 Carlson 235 by October 31st or sent by email to intlcoll@bridgeport.edu by
 the same date.
 
 The winner will be determined by a panel of faculty. Should you have any
