History

History is one of five concentration areas within the Literature and Civilization major. Those desiring to pursue the History concentration must take a minimum of fifteen (15) credit hours in this field of study.

The objectives of the History concentration are as follows. 1) Enable students to demonstrate competence regarding major issues, events and personalities in American and global history. 2) Help students appreciate the uniqueness of various cultures and see how they developed over time. 3) Empower students to discuss issues in American and world history from various perspectives and support their arguments with historical evidence. 4) Assist students in developing and/or enhancing their critical thinking and study skills, as well as a sense of responsibility that is required for success in a challenging and competitive world.

Courses in this concentration include: Major Figures in World History, World Civilization I, World Civilization II, American History to 1877, American History Since 1877, The Ancient Greeks, Ancient Rome, Roots of Modern Culture, East Asian Civilization, African-American History to 1877, African-American History Since 1877, Europe Since 1918, and Studies in African History and Culture.
