I want to learn more about:

Federal Perkins Loan - Perkins Loans are awarded to undergraduate students first, and then to graduate students based upon the availability of funds.  The interest rate is fixed at 5%, repayment begins 9 months after the student ceases to be at least half-time.

Federal Stafford Loan (Subsidized) - Subsidized Stafford Loans are available for undergraduate and graduate students.  The interest rate is fixed at 6.8%.  Repayment begins 6 months after the student ceases to be at least half-time and minimum payments are $50 per month.  The government pays the interest on the Subsidized Stafford loan during in-school periods and during the 6 month grace period.   Subsidized Stafford Loan limits are as follows:

Grade Level

Amount

Freshmen

$3,500

Sophomore

$4,500

Junior

$5,500

Senior

$5,500

Graduate

Federal Stafford Loan (Unsubsidized) - Unsubsidized Stafford Loans are available for independent students on both the undergraduate and graduate level.  The interest rate is fixed at 6.8%.  Repayment begins 6 months after the student ceases to be at least half-time and minimum payments are $50 per month.  Interest on the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan accrues from the day the loan is approved.  Students may pay interest as they go, or capitalize their interest payments.  Unsubsidized Stafford Loan limits are as follows:

Grade Level

Freshmen

$4,000

Sophomore

$4,000

Junior

$5,000

Senior

$5,000

Federal Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) - PLUS loans are available for credit-worthy parents of dependent, undergraduate students.  Graduate and Professional students may also apply for the PLUS to meet cost of attendance. The interest rate is fixed 8.5%.  Repayment begins 60 days after the loan is fully disbursed and minimum payments are $50 per month.  Interest on the PLUS Loan accrues from the day the loan is approved.

 How much can I borrow?
The amounts you can borrow depend on your grade level in school and on the type of student you are: dependent undergraduate, independent undergraduate (or a dependent undergraduate whose parents are unable to get a PLUS Loan), or a graduate student.
