General Information

These courses are designed to prepare the dental hygienist in the State of Connecticut to administer local anesthesia. The participant will be introduced to safe, effective administration of local anesthesia through lecture, laboratory, and clinical settings. The fee for the 3 day course is $950.

Course content areas include: rationale for pain management, client management, medical emergencies and review of essential anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology of pain control agents. In addition, the participant will perform efficient techniques of pain management through local anesthesia on clinical partners under the  supervision of qualified faculty.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will receive a Certificate of Local Anesthesia acceptable in the State of Connecticut.

Course Pre-requisites

  • Current License/Certification to practice dental hygiene (RDH)
  • Current Certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer/Healthcare Provider
  • Current Malpractice Insurance
  • Proof of Hepatitis B Vaccine
  • Completion of 8 hour self-study/didactic portion of course

Handbook of Local Anesthesia, with DVD (package), 5th Edition, by Stanley Malamed, Elisvier Mosby, 2004.

Course Guidelines

Upon receipt of registration fee and submitted documentation, the participant will be emailed specific course information.

Participants will be obligated to participate as a clinical patient. If you are pregnant, nursing, have high blood pressure, medically compromised, or are otherwise unable or unwilling to be a patient you must contact Fones School prior to the course to discuss accommodations. If unable or unwilling to participate as a patient, you will be asked to provide a patient for the clinical portion of this course.

Failure to successfully complete all course requirements and competencies voids certification and course refund. There is no credit for partial completion of course. Full course fee and updated documents will be required upon registration for a future course. Fones School of Dental Hygiene holds the right to cancel the course up to one week before the course. In the event that the course is canceled, registrants will receive full refund of tuition.

28 Hours Total: 20 Hours Didactic: (8 hours of study prior to course, 12 hours onsite) and 8 Hours Clinical. Participants will receive 20 hours of CE credit acceptable in the State of Connecticut.

On-Site Session Schedule

3 Day Course

Day One: 8:00 am - 5:00pm
Day Two: 8:00 am - 5:00pm
Day Three: 8:00 am -12:00pm

The courses will be held at the University of Bridgeport campus and Fones Dental Hygiene Health Center.

Course Presenters

Laura J. Greco, RDH, MSEd, is an Assistant Professor at the Fones School of Dental Hygiene, University of Bridgeport. Ms Greco is the second year coordinator at the Fones School and has broad experiences as both educator and clinician. Her lecture experiences include Periodontology, Clinical Practice, and Medically Compromised Patients, and Advanced Clinical Concepts. In addition, she is a clinical instructor at the Fones Dental Hygiene Health Center. Laura is the course coordinator and can be reached at laurag@bridgeport.edu.

Wendy M. Garcia, RDH, MSEd, is an Assistant Professor and Dental Hygiene, University of Bridgeport. Ms Garcia is the Dental Hygiene Community Coordinator at Fones School and has widespread experience in private practice dental hygiene. Her lecture experiences include Pharmacology, Oral Embryology, Anatomy, Histology, Community Health, and Special Needs Populations. In addition, Wendy is Past President of the Connecticut Dental Hygienists' Association.
