The Bachelor of Science in General Studies (B.S.G.S.) degree has been designed specifically to meet the needs of adults pursuing a high quality bachelor’s degree program and seeking maximum flexibility and breadth in their studies. A liberal number of free electives are permitted within the BSGS program, where students can accommodate all or most of their previous college studies. The BSGS enables adults to create their own individualized, interdisciplinary degree, with the on-going help of an academic advisor and faculty mentors.  The B.S.G.S. degree is offered through the UB IDEAL Program. The Social Science concentration of the General Studies degree embraces the traditional subjects that form a shared intellectual heritage of our diverse culture, as well as, promotes the integration, synthesis, and application of knowledge, communication and information systems.  The program is particularly focused in the area of interpersonal communications, group dynamics, a global historical viewpoint, human services and social psychology.

General Electives are courses that are outside the specific degree requirements and can be fulfilled by courses in other subjects, transfer courses, or other non-traditional credit options accepted by UB.

Transfer Credits
A maximum of fifteen credits (15) may be transferred in to satisfy the Concentration requirements.

A maximum of 66 credits may be transferred in from an accredited two-year school and 90 credits from an accredited four-year school.

Instructional Format
The B.S. in General Studies is offered entirely online. The courses are designed to be learner-centered in terms of scheduling, duration, learning materials, assignments, and interaction between faculty and students and among students. The online interaction is designed to encourage thoughtful and well-prepared discussions based on both the student's command of the coursework and their personal work experience.

Online courses leading to the B.S. in General Studies follow an accelerated 8-week format, allowing students to earn their degree at a full-time pace while still maintaining their professional work schedule. Courses are conducted entirely online and can be accessed at anytime from anywhere. Interaction with professors and other students is done through email and an online discussion board.

Online Orientation
All students are required to participate in an Online Orientation prior to beginning the program. During the Orientation students are given instructions on how to navigate the Blackboard course management system, strategies for being a successful online student, and access to other University resources, including the Wahlstrom Library's electronic databases. Successful completion of the Orientation is required of all new students in the online program.

Register For Courses
Students should register for courses online. A complete course schedule is available online.  Prior to registering, students should refer to their degree plan (and consult with their advisor if necessary).
