Work-Study is a federally funded, need-based program, which helps students meet educational expenses through part-time employment during the academic year and/or employment during the summer. The Financial Aid Office determines eligibility for Work-Study.

Eligibility

The Financial Aid Office has reviewed your application materials, determined your need and established an appropriate self-help portion, which can be met through a loan and/or Work-Study job.

Finding a Position
Students receiving Federal Work-Study must go to the Career Services Office preferably during the first two weeks of school and fill out an On-Campus Employment Application. This way your name is included in the active list of on-campus job seekers.

The Career Services Office is located on the 6th floor, Wahlstrom Library.  Phone: 203-576-4466.

Based on your skills, qualifications and schedule the Student Employment Coordinator will refer you to a Department.

FWS Employment is not guaranteed. The Career Services Office is available to assist students in identifying on-campus and off-campus placement. However, the final choice to hire students is up to the employer or supervisor. As in the real world of work, students must compete for positions and must prove to the employer/supervisor that they are the best candidates for the job. (Career Services is ready to assist you, if you need help with interviewing skills). During first five weeks of the semester, Federal Work Study students are given priority consideration for job openings.

Receiving Payment/Tax Implications

Supervisors of all Student Workers must submit their timesheets by 4:30 pm on the dates listed on the back of the timesheet. Payments will be issued in the form of a check every two weeks for the hours worked. Students may pick up their checks at the Payroll Office located on the 7th floor of the Library by showing their Picture ID. All late timesheets will be applied to your next pay period. Students will be paid only if they work.

Federal Work-Study Earnings are considered to be earned income and therefore subject to all applicable Federal, State and Local taxes. We recommend that you check with your family regarding appropriate filing status on all tax forms.

Your Federal Work-Study wages will be at least the current federal minimum wage, but it may be higher, depending on the type of work you do and the skills required. Unearned Work-Study is returned to the Federal Government.

You can also go to the Payroll Office on the 7th floor and sign an agreement to forward your check to the Cashier’s Office so that it could be applied to your account.
