Why International Political Economy and Diplomacy?

In an era where there is a growing focus on economic diplomacy, UB’s B.A. in International Political Economy and Diplomacy (IPED) fills a crucial niche. The major provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the global political economy and with the analytical skills needed to evaluate change and direction. The study of the international economic system provides insight into how it produces and distributes wealth. The study of the international political system provides insight into how institutions and rules govern social and economic development.

Over the summer Rubely Marte had an internship with a grassroots campaign effort started by the Democratic National Convention (DNC). Rubely is from Bronx, New York, and is an IPED major in her senior year. Through her experience over the summer, she came to feel the uniqueness of her IPED major.  Its course requirements made her knowledgeable about ideology, international affairs and policy, which would open doors for her future. She expressed that “what you learn in the textbooks goes far beyond the classroom, and people will pay you for that knowledge.” Interning with the DNC was also how she was able to get her internship with Mayor DeStefano’s office.

Gabriella Kirkley took an internship in Christopher Shay’s office, Congressman of Connecticut's 4th District.

The Pi Sigma Alpha National Honor Society at the University of Bridgeport
