Your Billing Rights

This notice contains important information about your rights and our responsibilities under the Fair Credit Billing Act.

Notify Us In Case Of Errors Or Questions About Your Bill

If you think your bill has an error, or if you need additional information about a transaction on your bill, write us (on a separate sheet) at 126 Park Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06604 (Attention: Bursar’s Office). Write to us as soon as possible. We must hear from you no later than 60 days after we sent you the first bill on which the error or problem appeared. You can telephone us, but doing so will not preserve your rights.

In your letter, give us the following information:

  • Your name and student account number.
  • The dollar amount of the suspected error.
  • Describe the error and explain, if you can, why you believe there is an error. If you need more information, describe the item you are not sure about.

If you have authorized us to pay your bill automatically with your credit card, savings or checking account, you can stop the payment on any amount you think is wrong. To stop the payment your letter must reach us three business days before the automatic payment is scheduled to occur.

Your Rights And Our Responsibilities After We Receive Your Written Notice

We must acknowledge your letter within 30 days. Within 90 days, we must either correct the error or explain why the bill is correct.

After we receive your letter, we will not collect any amount you question, or report you as delinquent.

You do not have to pay any questioned amount while we are investigating, but you are still obligated to pay the portion of your bill that is not in question.

If we determine that we made a mistake on your bill, you will not have to pay any finance charges related to any questioned amount.

If there is no error, you will have to pay finance charges, and you will also have to make up any missed payments on the questioned amount. In either case, we will send you a statement of the amount you owe and the date that it is due.

If you fail to pay the amount you owe, at least ten days after you have had an opportunity to respond to our investigation results we may report you as delinquent and that the debt is in dispute.

Finance Charge and Collection Costs

A finance charge is computed by applying a monthly periodic rate up to 1.0 % (Annual Percentage Rate of 12 %), to the amount of the outstanding balance less any payments received on or before the last business day of that month. Any excess of credits over charges made during a month shall be considered as payment for the purpose of calculating the finance charge. These credits or charges shall not modify the finance charge incurred in any previous month.

All debt not paid in a timely manner may be referred to a Collection Agency. If you feel the charge is in error, please contact the Bursar’s Office to avoid Collection Agency action. If it is deemed necessary to refer the account to an Agency, the debtor (account holder) will be responsible for all collection costs and including reasonable attorney's fees incurred by the University with respect to their delinquent accounts in accordance with Connecticut Law. Once your account has been assigned to an outside agency, please contact the Collection Agency to discuss your account.
