GSB 430: Organizational Behavior

Spring 2005 Weekend Program

Updated 12/8/04

The assigned text for the course is Effective Behavior in Organizations, Seventh Edition, published by McGraw-Hill and authored  by Cohen, Fink, Gadon & Willits. The  ISBN #  is 0-07-2880392. Reading from the Text is assigned for each class, and a variety of cases provided in the text will be used in the course.

This is a learning-by-doing course. Students will write individual case analyses, teams of students will work together to prepare group written analysis of cases, various large and small group activities will be carried out in class, the final examination will be each student’s written personal history of his/her activity and discovery in the course.

Students are expected to maintain notes concerning the various activities they participate in throughout the course and prepare a five to ten page written analysis detailing what he/she has discovered about him/herself from the experiences encountered in the course as the final examination. The paper will also describe what the student has learned about group structure, group activity and how to participate constructively in a group setting. This paper will account for 40% of final assigned grade, or 400 points and will be due one week after the last class meeting.

Three individually prepared case analyses of assigned cases will be required, one each due at the beginning of the second, third and fourth classes. Three group prepared cases will also be assigned that will also be due at the beginning the beginning of the second, third and fourth classes. Cases assigned are specified in the course outline below. Group cases will each contribute 10% (total, 300% or 300 points) to the final grade. Group cases will be due between classes as instructed by the Professor. Three individual cases will be worth 5%, 7.5% and 7.5% (50 points the first case, 75 each for second and third cases, total 200 points) and contribute 20% to the final grade. Individual cases are due at the beginning of each class (second, third and fourth) for which they are assigned.

On the morning of each class meeting, a brief quiz will be administered covering the assigned text reading for that class. Each quiz will be worth 25 points, and the four together will account for 100 points or 10% of the final grade.

Extra credit may be obtained by selecting and preparing a “Personal Application Exercise” from one of the three chapters assigned. These exercises are found at the end of each chapter and are clearly identified. Up to 10 points for each competently prepared exercise will be available if handed in at the beginning of the class for which chapters have been assigned (first class included).
