One of the university's best known and most successful graduates, Frederick A. DeLuca, who founded the Subway restaurants, received an honorary doctorate of humane letters.
It was very special to receive this honor, DeLuca said, in that his mother, Carmella, had always wanted him to become a doctor. When he received his degree, he looked up at her in her seat and said, "Mom, I finally got it."

Jerry Penacoli, a 1978 summa cum laude graduate of UB who was graduation speaker that year as senior class president, was UB graduation speaker again, addressing the more than 1,200 graduates in the Class of 2003 in ceremonies in the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.
Penacoli, a Dana Scholar and class president in three of his four years at UB, began his television career as a student intern at NewsCenter 4 in New York and Channel 8 in New Haven, then moved on to television news anchor and show host roles in Jacksonville, Fla., Miami, Philadelphia, New York and Los Angeles. He stepped beyond his “day job” in news in recent years to pursue another dream, that of being an actor. He has appeared in many movies, in TV series such as “The Practice” and “The District,” and is a regular on the soap opera, “Days of Our Lives.”
