Insurance Requirement
All J-1 Exchange Visitors and their J-2 dependents are required
to maintain health and accident insurance during the entire period
of their participation in the Exchange Visitor program at the
University of Bridgeport. U.S. law requires a minimum level of
coverage:
- Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or
illness
- Repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500
- Expenses associated with medical evacuation of the Exchange
Visitor to his/her home country in the amount of $10,000
- A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
J-1 students must purchase the University of Bridgeport student
insurance policy, which meets these guidelines. Insurance for
dependents of students may also be purchased through the
University. J-1 Professors, Research Scholars, Short Term Scholars
and Specialists will have to meet this requirement through other
insurance options, typically purchased in their home country or
provided through their employer.
An Exchange Visitor who willfully fails to maintain the
insurance coverage will be considered to be in violation of the
U.S. federal requirement and will be subject to termination from
the Exchange Visitor program at the University of Bridgeport.
