Message from the Dean

The University of Bridgeport takes considerable pride in its history, in the many successful graduates of its programs and in the curriculum that it currently offers. A continuing source of pride is the School of Education and Human Resources.

Two Divisions make up the School. The graduate and undergraduate programs in the Human Resources division focus on the development of individuals interested in the field of human services. The undergraduate majors in human services and psychology are among the most popular and fastest growing at the University. The graduate program is for students who are committed to careers in community counseling, college student personnel, and human resource development. Students successfully completing this program are awarded the Master of Science Degree in Counseling.

The Education Division is devoted to the preparation of teachers and administrators for the schools in the greater tri-state area. Our programs are concentrated at the graduate level and are designed with the adult learner in mind. The Teacher Preparation Program prepares candidates for certification as teachers in the public schools of Connecticut. Most of our Masters level students' work as interns for one year in area schools and enjoy the reward of a tuition paid Masters Degree. Other students earn their Masters Degree the old fashion way; they pay for it and they progress through the program at their own pace.

The Education division also prepares candidates at the advanced graduate level for careers as school administrators or supervisors and Reading and Language Arts Consultants. The creative MODMap program affords already certified teachers an opportunity to create a course of study unique to their area of interest. Successful completion of an advanced study program leads to a Sixth Year degree or diploma. Our candidates are well received in the field and can be found teaching and leading in the vast majority of schools in the region.

The Education Division also concentrates on management and leadership training. At the doctoral level, students who are experienced in their chosen field are trained for leadership positions at senior levels or as experts in their field. The doctoral program leads to the Ed.D. Degree and concentrates on the leadership development of working candidates in higher education, public and private schools and private sector business organizations. Graduates from the doctoral program are employed in leadership positions at universities, community colleges, public schools, corporate environments and government.
