Two graduate students from the University of Bridgeport International College have been appointed to lead the United Nations 7th Annual Youth Assembly that will be held in New York City on August 4 through 6.

Francisco Eguiguren, of Ecuador, was appointed as Program Coordinator, the Youth Assembly’s top post, by United Nations Department of Public Information, Friendship Ambassadors Foundation, and the Mission of Finland, which is the primary sponsor of the event.

Yuan Zhang, from Shanghai, China, is responsible for media production and outreach.

Both students are earning their master’s degrees in the Global Development Peace Program at the International College.

“Francisco and Yuan are both very strong students and already each has a wide variety of international experiences,” said International College Dean Thomas Ward. “Francisco has interned with the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and with the United Nations Environmental Program. Yuan has already had numerous experiences with media production in Shanghai. Their talents will contribute greatly to the success of the program.”

This is not the first time UB International College Students have distinguished themselves at the U.N. This spring, Eguiguren and UB received the Distinguished Delegation Award at the 2010 National Model U.N., which took place March 31 to April 3.

The Annual Youth Assembly attracts nearly 1,000 young people between the ages of 16 to 24 from around the world. They meet with U.N. officials and nongovernmental associations (NGOs) while exploring solutions to achieve Millennium Development Goals of fighting poverty and hunger, encouraging sustainable development, and supporting social progress.

Participants also receive practical training in such matters as starting NGOs and administering or managing campaigns to work toward social change in their home communities.

Eguiguren said that he began planning the event and scheduling keynote speakers back in December 2009, when the U.N. declared 2010 to be the International Year of the Youth.

“I am truly convinced that the 7th Annual Youth Assembly will be an important contributor for the empowerment of youth leadership toward the accomplishment of the Millennium Development Goals,” he said. “The program and the logistics of the event are ready, and I look forward to have a great Youth Assembly. I have been very flattered to be the program coordinator of such an important project at the United Nations.”
