UB merchandising students visit NYC's Garment District for insider's look at fashion industry
University of Bridgeport fashion merchandising Professor Janet Albert and her Costume History class have visited New York City’s Garment District to explore internship opportunities and observe three distinctly different aspects of the fashion industry.
The Fashion Merchandising Program is run through the School of Business and offers both Associate in Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. The trips to New York, said Albert, are an integral part of the program’s career-oriented curriculum, which combines classroom teaching with an exposure to the fashion industry via internships and interaction with top designers.
“By visiting the fashion markets the students are able to see first-hand the operations and global nature of the fashion industry and to observe the different types of careers available in the fashion business,” Albert added.
Albert’s class made its visit in March, stopping first at the Costume History Museum to view a wide range of costumes ranging from early 20th-century corsets to garments from the “Go-Go Years” of the 1960s and present day. Additionally, students observed two other exhibitions: Night and Day, exploring the evolution of the rules that have governed fashion over the past 250 years, and American Beauty, which presented innovative clothing construction by American designers.
The class also toured Eileen Fisher’s new downtown showroom and met with Janine Zeccari, a former UB student, as well as four executives who spoke about design, merchandising, textile, color, and sales operations. Students were encouraged to apply for internships.
The final stop was a visit to a converting operation where the head of textile design, Len Kuperman, explained the operation of printing fabrics, CAD designing, and merchandise sales tools.
Student Whitney Selby said, “This was the most educational of all our trips and enhances our course information.”
