The University of Bridgeport (UB) will host Fresh Check Day events on September 24 and September 26 to raise awareness about mental health issues and make resources available to students as part of a campaign held on college campuses annually to help young people combat depression.

Fresh Check Day events at UB begin at 5 p.m. September 24 at the Cox Student Center Great Room. Events include Vibrational Sound Massage by Gong the Planet and Therapy Dogs.

At 7 p.m., public speaker Jordan Burnham will discuss mental health disorders. Burnham attempted to take his own life during his senior year of high school, and his miraculous survival propelled him to begin to deal with his depression and learn healthier coping mechanisms.

UB has opened the event to area teachers, clergy, guidance counselors and other experts who work closely with young people.

“We feel it’s incumbent to share these resources with other institutions who work with young people,” said UB Director of Counseling and Disability Services Jessica Mills. “Depression, eating disorders, and other mental-health issues can be crippling to adolescents and young adults, and as educators, we have a commitment to making sure we reach as many students as possible.”

UB Fresh Check Day events continue on Thursday, September 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in People’s Park—located between Carstensen Hall and Cox Student Center—with live music, free food, ice cream, vibrational sound massage, interactive expo booths, interactive expo booths, prizes, and giveaways. Information from area community and health providers, such as True Colors, Center for Women and Families, and Bridgeport YMCA, will also be available.

Free meals for students have been donated by Subway of Fairfield and Sodhexo Dining Services.
