The Fones School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Bridgeport (UB) has awarded $645,000 in scholarships to bachelor of science degree students enrolled in its dental hygiene program.

The scholarships are funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as part of its Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students campaign, which provides funds to schools to award scholarships to full-time, financially needy students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are enrolled in professional health or nursing programs.

UB received a $645,000 HRSA grant for the 2012-13 academic year. Funding for the four-year grant is expected to continue through 2016.

Rep. Jim Himes, D-CT, supported UB’s grant application, and recently met with Fones students who were awarded NRSA scholarships for this year.

Expanding education opportunities should be the cornerstone of our efforts to improve the economy in the long run,” Himes said. “As Congress continues to debate our nation’s budget priorities, we need to remember that scholarships like this HRSA grant provides are the type of investment that will give well-deserving young people the chance to make their own lives better while simultaneously improving our economy.”

Since its inception, Fones School has been dedicated to serving patients in need and promoting health among children, the elderly, and the poor. Through its numerous programs, Fones students and faculty provide free and low-cost cleanings, dental exams, and other treatments at its clinic on the UB campus and at schools, senior centers, and other sites throughout Fairfield County.

“The HRSA program supports the University’s longstanding commitment to promote the health of all members of our community,” said UB Vice President of University Relations Mary-Jane Foster.
