UB and Center for Women and Families host candlelight vigil on October 26
The University of Bridgeport and the Center for Women and Families of Eastern Fairfield County will host a candlelight vigil on Tuesday, October 26 to recognize victims of domestic violence.
The public is welcome to participate in the event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Cox Student Center, 244 University Avenue, Bridgeport.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Last year, 19 people were killed in Connecticut due to domestic violence.
“The vigil not only recognizes victims of domestic violence, it also is meant to give hope to those affected by it by honoring survivors, too,” said Edina Oestricher, assistant dean of students at UB. “Domestic violence affects women and men, young and old. As an educational institution and member of the community, we feel it’s important to help increase awareness about this important issue.”
The Center for Women and Families of Eastern Fairfield County provides free help, including a 24/7 hotline that can be reached at (203) 384-9559. Counseling also is available at the Center, 753 Fairfield Ave., Bridgeport.
