The University of Bridgeport, in conjunction with the Bridgeport Public Education Fund, is proud to present the Connecticut premiere of The Pride of Lions, winner of the 2010 NY International Film Festival “Best Sports Documentary” award.

The free showing, sponsored by JPMorgan Chase, begins at 5 p.m. at the Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. duPont III Tower Room in the Arnold Bernhard Center at the University of Bridgeport, 84 Iranistan Avenue. To attend, please contact (203) 576-4696 or mjfoster@bridgeport.edu.

Directed by Kathy Silver, a high school media teacher in Bridgeport, CT, The Pride of Lions tells the remarkable story of Bassick High School’s underdog football and soccer teams as they capture the most unlikely victories in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

“Other schools have their own fields, their own lights, their own water supply, their own everything. Our practice field is surrounded by the ’hood. There’s a lot of gang activity and violence going on while we try to practice,” says Keith Teele, a member of Bassick football team and one of several student narrators in the film.

The 20-minute documentary features footage shot and edited by Silver’s media students, and includes dramatic footage of a tied football game against Harding High School, with just 15.5 seconds left on the clock. The scene, called “The Final Play,” won the State Farm Insurance Company $15,000 “Friday Night Feats” highlight contest featured on YouTube.

Bassick students, many of whom don’t own computers, were able to vote for “The Final Play” online only after their school obtained special permission to unblock access to YouTube on school computers.
