Ivan BarbalicIvan Barbalic, who graduated from the University of Bridgeport (UB) School of Business and went on to serve as permanent representative of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations, will be granted a Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa from UB on Monday, February 13.

The ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. in the duPont Tower Room in the Arnold Bernhard Center.

Praising him as a “young man who has already made his mark in the world,” International College Dean Thomas Ward said: “Ambassador Barbalic was the youngest president of the Security Council in the history of the United Nations. He often attributes his success to the fact that, while at UB, he decided to find his own way. Instead of looking for a high-paying job in international finance in the U.S., he returned to his country to serve his people. He has set a high standard for all of our students.”

Prior to earning his business degree from UB, he received in 2001 a European regional Master of Science in Democracy and Human Rights in South-East Europe from the University of Sarajevo and at University of Bologna.

He has served as lecturer at the International League of Humanists, a group founded to promote peace in Southeast Europe, and has been a member of the UN Development Programme’s Early Warning System (EWS) in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

EWS is a crisis-management system whereby UN monitors forecast the potential outbreak of political crises to avert conflict and protect citizens.

From 2005 to 2007, he served on his country’s negotiation team for the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Union, after earlier working at its Directorate for European Integration from 2000 to 2001.

He also is vice president of a non-governmental organization known the European Movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina NGO, a position he has held since 2006.
