The University of Bridgeport’s Office of Community Outreach is holding a weeklong series of events in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The events expand upon the concerns for brotherhood, community, civil liberties and human rights King exemplified. Dr. King spoke on the UB campus several times and did receive an honorary degree from the university.
On Monday, the official holiday honoring Dr. King, a video of King’s speeches on community involvement will be shown continuously at the Cox Student Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Some students will leave from there to participate in the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Walk in Bridgeport. That begins at noon.
On Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., students will participate with the children at the South End Community Center in a discussion of how to be part of the community.
The Rev. E.L. Smallwood, UB’s Protestant campus minister, will reflect on Dr. King’s legacy in leading a discussion group in the private dining room of the Cox Student Center on Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Jane Fix, president of the Bridgeport Area League of Women Voters, will lead a discussion on civil liberties and personal choices on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the private dining room of the student center.
On Friday, Dustin Welt will discuss community service and service learning. The session starts at 11 a.m., and will be in the private dining room of the student center.
