The University of Bridgeport awarded its annual full-tuition scholarships to two City of Bridgeport children last Thursday, June 8. Each year UB awards one student from Longfellow and one from Roosevelt Middle School. Both children, always a male and a female, are in the eighth grade.
This year's winners were Andrea Ryan (Roosevelt) and Emeka Nwajagu (Longfellow). Each winner must maintain an overall B+ average during high school and perform at least a six-month period of community service during their last two years of high school. Children are selected for the awards based on a number of criteria, including academic excellence. They are monitored and mentored by their schools and by the University of Bridgeport as they progress through to their senior year in high school.
The presentation of the awards highlights the continued cooperation between the University of Bridgeport and the Bridgeport Public Schools.
Many previous scholarship winners, who are now in the 9th-12th grades, and their parents attended the award ceremony.
Each tuition scholarship carries a value of about $50,000.
