Fourth Annual Education Law Conference

The University of Bridgeport School of Education and Human Resources will hold its Fourth Annual Education Law Conference on Thursday, April 5, beginning with registration at 8:00 AM and the opening general session at 9:00 AM, both in the Arnold Bernhard Center at the corner of Iranistan and University Avenues. The theme of the day-long conference is, "What is Past is Prologue: Recent Court Decisions Affecting Education."

Dr. Theodore Sergi, Connecticut Commissioner of Education, will be the luncheon speaker at 12:30 PM. The keynote speaker at the opening general session is Dr. Joseph Beckham, J.D., Ph.D., of Florida State University, speaking on the topic, "Overview of Significant Case Law."

The conference has established itself as the premier forum for the study of education law in the state of Connecticut. It is an ideal educational opportunity for school superintendents, principals, attorneys, counselors, teachers and other professionals in education who need to keep informed about this fast changing and complex field. Nine concurrent sessions will run throughout the day and feature a variety of educators from around the country who are leaders in their area of expertise. A partial list of topics and speakers includes:
  • "The Long Arm of School Discipline: A Right Response to Offensive Off-Campus Student Websites", by Edwin C. Darden, attorney for the Office of General Council, National School Boards Association

  • "Summary of Recent Supreme Court Decisions Affecting Education", by Hon. Alan Nevis, Justice, US Federal District Court, Bridgeport

  • "Legal Problems of the Religious, Private and Public Schools", by Ralph Mawdsley, President-elect of the Education Law Association, Cleveland State University

Other topics include the legal issues surrounding hazing, teachers' rights and discipline. There is a fee for the conference. More information can be obtained by calling 203-576-4192.
